Transmission

Both the Ford Maverick and the Ford F150 come with 2 types of transmissions. One of the transmissions is specifically designed for hybrid cars, while the other is used only with fully gasoline-based cars.

These are the two transmissions that come with the Ford Maverick:

  1. Power-Split: Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (2.5L FHEV only)
  2. 8-Speed Automatic (2.0L EcoBoost only)

The Ford F150, on the other hand, can come with these two kinds of transmissions:

  1. Electronic 10-Speed Automatic Transmission (Non-hybrid engines)
  2. Hybrid Electronic 10-Speed Automatic Transmission (3.5 L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6)

The following table lists down the gearing ratios for all transmissions mentioned above:

The Ford Maverick comes with a CVT for transmission if you get the hybrid engine option. The Ford F150 does not come with any CVT option. The benefits of CVT include better fuel economy, smaller size, and lighter weight.

Moreover, using a CVT will result in no shocks when you accelerate. But they may also cost more to repair and have higher maintenance costs. So, this is something that you should consider when choosing the engine of your Ford Maverick.

Gear Shifter Type

The Ford Maverick uses rotary gear shift dials in all trim levels. The Ford F150, in contrast, uses column shifters and floor shifters depending on the trim.

This is the gear shifter you will get with your Ford F150:

The Stowable Floor Shifter of the Ford F150 lets you stow away the shifter in order to bring out the interior work surface. It can be very convenient if you need a flat surface to rest your laptop to get some work done. This feature is absent in the Ford Maverick.

Drivetrain Configuration

The Ford Maverick has a 4×2 drivetrain by default, but it can be upgraded to 4×4. However, upgrading to the 4×4 drivetrain requires you to install the 2.0 L EcoBoost engine. Conversely, the F150 comes with either the 4×2 or the 4×4 drivetrain configuration by default depending on the trim level that you buy.

Drivetrain Configuration of the Ford F150 depending on the trim level:

Fuel Economy

The EPA estimated combined fuel economy of the Ford F150 is 12 MPG to 25 MPG. The EPA estimated the combined fuel economy of the Ford Maverick, however, ranges from 25 MPG to 37 MPG.

The fuel economy of the Ford F-150 varies across different models and configurations. The 2WD models equipped with 6-cylinder engines, such as the 2.7L and 3.5L, achieve around 18 MPG in the city. But they  range from 24 to 25 MPG on the highway, resulting in a combined fuel economy of 21 MPG.

The 2WD models with the 3.3L V6 and 5.0L V8, offer a slightly lower city fuel economy of 16 to 19 MPG. But they have comparable highway fuel efficiency of 22 to 25 MPG, resulting in a combined fuel economy of 20 MPG.

The 2WD HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Ford Maverick model with a 3.5L V6 engine, however, provides impressive fuel economy. It has a combined fuel economy of 25 MPG.

The fuel economy ranges from 17 to 20 MPG in the city, 23 to 25 MPG on the highway. Moreover, the combined fuel economy of 19 to 20 MPG.

Overall, The Ford Maverick is much more fuel efficient when compared to the Ford F150.

Verdict: The Ford F150 offers more engine options, has greater torque and horsepower, and has more gears in the transmission than the Ford Maverick. The Ford Maverick, in contrast, has much better fuel economy and a simple rotary gear shifter.

Off-Roading Features

The Ford F150 and the Ford Maverick also differ when it comes to off-roading. Some aspects of the Ford Maverick favor off-roading, while some aspects favor the Ford F150 more.

Torque

The Ford Maverick, depending on the engine, has a torque of 155 lb.-ft to 277 lb.-ft. The Torque of the Ford 150, on the other hand, ranges from 265 lb.-ft to 640 lb.-ft. This makes the Ford F150 better suited for off-roading based on only torque.

Torque is an important factor when it comes to driving off-road. As shown earlier, the 2.0 L EcoBoost gives you more torque compared to the 2.5 L FHEV engine when it comes to Ford Maverick. So, if you are going to be purchasing a Ford Maverick for driving off-road, get the 2.0 L EcoBoost engine.

But the Ford F150 simply gives you much more torque. As a matter of fact, the F150 offers you a 5.2 L Supercharged High Output V8 just for this purpose. This engine produces 640 lb.-ft torque at 4,250 rpm and only comes with the Ford F150 Raptor.

Base Curb Weight

The base curb weight of the Ford Maverick is only 3,563 lbs. to 3,731 lbs. In contrast, the base curb weight of the Ford F150 ranges from 4,021 lbs. to 5,886 lbs. This makes the Ford F150 significantly heavier than the Ford Maverick.

The base curb weight refers to the weight of the vehicle including only the weight of the fuel and all necessary equipment. The weight of a vehicle is important for off-roading. This is because lighter vehicles can easily overcome obstacles and are less likely to get stuck in the mud. They are also less likely to roll over.

Here is the base curb weight of the Ford Maverick depending on the engine and the drivetrain:

Engine DrivetrainBase Curb Weight
2.5 L FHEV Engine4 x 23,674 lbs.
2.5 L FHEV Engine4 x 4N/A
2.0 L EcoBoost Engine4 x 23,563 lbs.
2.0 L EcoBoost Engine4 x 43,731 lbs.

The base curb weight of the Ford F150 depends on the engine, drivetrain configuration, cab style, and box size.

Off-Roading Packages

The Ford Maverick comes with FX4 and Tremor packages that are dedicated to off-roading. The Ford F150, however, only offers the FX4 off-roading package.

The FX4 off-roading package of the Ford F150 includes the following additional features:

  1. 3.31 electronic locking rear axle (Available with only 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 and 5.0 L Ti-VCT V8 engines)

You can also get the Maverick off-road Tremor package which includes:

  1. Rugged all-terrain tires
  2. The dark appearance of head and tail lamps
  3. 1-inch lift suspensions
  4. Front suspensions pre-tuned for off-road driving

In addition to this, there is a Maverick Tremor off-roading appearance package. This package includes all the functional features of the Maverick Tremor package, as well as some extra appearance features. The appearance features include:

  1. Carbonized gray roof, hood, lower door graphic, and door handles.
  2. Carbonized gray mirrors with the Maverick Lariat trim or if you have the XLT luxury package with the Maverick XLT trim.

The Maverick Tremor appearance package requires you to have a 4×4 drivetrain configuration.

Ground Clearance

The ground clearance of the Ford F150 ranges from 8.2 inches to 9.4 inches. The ground clearance of the Ford Maverick, on the other hand, ranges from 8.3 inches to 9.4 inches.

This is the minimum ground clearance you will get on the Ford Maverick depending on your drivetrain configuration and off-roading package:

Ford Maverick Build ConfigurationGround Clearance in inches

8.0 4×28.3 8.2 N/A
8.0 4×49.4 8.7 N/A

The two trucks have similar ground clearance depending on the drivetrain.

Ramp Breakover Angle

The ramp break-over angle of the Ford Maverick ranges from 16.6 Degrees to 19.9 Degrees. In the case of the Ford F150, the ramp break-over angle can be 16.0 degrees to 23.5 degrees.

The ramp break-over angle refers to the angle made by your tires and the center of the underbody of your truck. If this angle is too small your truck will hit objects underneath. So, for off-roading, having a high ramp break-over angle is desirable. See this picture for a better understanding of the ramp break-over angle:

This is the ramp break-over angle of the Ford Maverick depending on the build:

The ramp break-over angle of a 4×4 6.5 ft. regular cab Ford F150 is the highest.

Approach Angle and Departure Angle

The approach angle of the Ford Maverick is between 20.6 Degrees to 30.7 Degrees. In contrast, the angle of approach of the Ford F150 ranges from 21.0 degrees to 24.9 degrees. Likewise, the departure angle of the Ford Maverick is 21.2 Degrees to 22.2 Degrees. Similarly, the angle of departure of the Ford F150 ranges from 22.9 degrees to 26.3 degrees.

This image shows the angle of approach and the angle of departure:

8.0 4×221.0 to 21.2 23.9
8.0 4×424.6 to 24.9 25.6 to 26.1

This shows that the Ford F150 generally has higher angles of approach and departure compared to the Ford Maverick. But the Ford Maverick with the tremor off-roading package has a much higher angle of approach.

This means the Ford Maverick performs a bit poorer at climbing up steep hills than the Ford F150. But the opposite becomes true when you get the tremor off-roading package with the Ford Maverick. The Ford F150, on the other hand, is always better than the Ford Maverick at climbing down hills when considering the angle of departure.

Verdict: The Ford F150 has more torque and has a trim level that is dedicated to off-roading. It also has better ramp break-over, approach, and departure angles than the Ford Maverick. The Ford Maverick, however, has less base curb weight, which is useful when off-road driving.

External Features

The Ford F150 and the Ford Maverick also have plenty of external features that can be used to distinguish the two. The biggest external difference between the two, however, is the size. The Ford Maverick is a smaller truck compared to the Ford F150.

Overall Length

The overall length of the Ford Maverick is only 199.7 inches. On the other hand, the overall length of the Ford F150 ranges from 209.1 inches to 250.3 inches. This makes the Ford F150 significantly longer than the Ford Maverick.

The Ford F150 comes in Four different lengths depending on the cab style and the cargo box style. These are 209.1 inches, 231.7 inches, 243.5 inches, and 250.3 inches. The Ford Maverick, compared to this, comes in only one length: 199.7 inches.

This makes the Ford Maverick significantly easier to maneuver in tight constrained spaces. The Ford Maverick can also fit into much smaller garages compared to the Ford F150.

Maximum Height

The Ford F150 is also considerably taller than the Ford Maverick. The minimum height of the Ford F150 is 75.2 inches and the maximum height is 77.6 inches. The height of the Ford Maverick, however, is 68.7 inches only.

The Ford Maverick is significantly shorter than the Ford 150. This means the Ford Maverick can be parked in smaller garages and are less likely to hit overhead obstacles. Moreover, shorter cars face less drag, which means these cars are more responsive and have a higher fuel economy.

Vehicle Width

The width of the Ford Maverick is 77.9 inches with the mirrors folded. With the mirrors unfolded, the width of the maverick increases to 83.5 inches. The width of the Ford F150, on the other hand, is 83.6 inches with folded mirrors. with the mirrors unfolded the width of the Ford F150 is 95.7 inches.

This is the width of the Ford Maverick and the Ford F150:

CategoryWidth (Ford Maverick) (in.)Width (Ford F150) (in.)
Width Including Mirrors83.5 95.7
Width With Folded Mirrors77.9 83.6
Vehicle Front Track Width63.4 67.9
Vehicle Rear Track Width62.8 68.3

This shows that the Ford Maverick has a lower body width than the Ford F150. This can make driving in narrow passages much easier.

Headlamp Technology

Every Ford Maverick comes with modern LED headlamps straight from the factory. But with the Ford F150, some trim options come with halogen headlamps.

These are the default headlamp technology you can get with a Ford F150:

Trim LevelHeadlight Status
F150 XL

All Ford Mavericks, on the other hand, comes with LED headlamps:

Trim LevelHeadlight Status
Maverick XLLED Headlamps
Maverick XLTWiper-activated LED Headlamps. Black headlamps are optionally available
Maverick LariatWiper-activated LED Headlamps with LED signature accent lighting.   Black headlamps are optionally available.

Wheelbase

The wheelbase of all Ford Mavericks is only 121.1 Inches. The wheelbase of the Ford F150, however, ranges from 122.8 inches to 164.1 inches. The wheelbase of the Ford F150 varies depending on the style of the cab and the box size that you purchase.

Wheelbase is an important factor if you are looking for a truck that offers comfortable rides. This is because the longer the wheelbase is, the less vibration you will feel. A short wheelbase, however, lets you do tighter maneuvers. A smaller wheelbase will let you make turns using smaller circles. So, on narrow roads, such as country roads, a shorter wheelbase is preferable.

The wheelbase of the Ford Maverick is smaller than the Ford F150. So, if you want a shorter wheelbase, get the Ford Maverick. But if you prioritize ride utility, get a Ford F150 with a bigger wheelbase. The wheelbase of the Ford F150, however, varies depending on the style that you choose as shown here:

Pickup box styleRegular Cab (in.)Super Cab (in.)SuperCrew (in.)
5.5 ft. StylesideN/AN/A145.4
6.5 ft. Styleside122.8 145.4 157.2
8.0 ft. Styleside141.5 164.1 N/A

Moreover, picking a smaller wheelbase will reduce the cargo volume of your Ford F150.

Verdict: The Ford Maverick has a smaller size and can fit into narrower spaces relative to the Ford F150. The Ford F150, on the other hand, has a bigger wheelbase and can offer you a more comfortable ride.
